The 16 Elements of Socionics (Model L)

In my Intro to Socionics (Model L) presentation, I explain the four “Jungian Faculties” (“SensingS, “iNtuitionN, “LogicT & “FeelingF) and how they’re divided by the Introversion/Extraversion dichotomy into the 8 Information Metabolism elements (Si, Se, Ni, Ne, Te, Ti, Fe & Fi) that are commonly referred to in Jungian Typology. However, these aren’t the fundamental elements of the Socion; several dichotomies further subdivide the familiar 8 elements into a total 16, corresponding with each of the 16 Types. While different socionics schools often frame these subdivisions by more diagnostically obscure dichotomies, I’ve found that the “strength” dichotomies – Concrete (S.) vs Abstract (N.) & Objective (T.) vs Subjective (F.) – most intuitively highlight their differences. In this entry we’ll be going over the two monadic sub-elements which make up each of the 8 IMEs in Model L, and note the types they correspond with:

“Sensation” Si

Si“Observation” Si(T.)

External Sensation – quite simply, a subject’s controlled intake of external data, selectively focusing one’s receptive sensory faculties and attention on functional details.

  • SLI

«Si» “Stimulation” Si(F.)

Involved Sensation – one’s subjective experience of incoming bodily stimuli and physical vitality. Such experiences are usually charged with the subjective valences of our somatic feelings.

  • SEI

“Drive” Se

«Se» “Impetus” Se(F.)

Involved Drive – the generation of viscerally felt, mobilizing somatic impulses which convert one’s vital reserves into vigorous exertion towards specific, concrete aims.

  • SEE

Se“Actuation” Se(T.)

External Drive – the regulatory leveraging of force to control and shape one’s physical environment, bringing it into conformity with the bounds of circumscribed parameters..

  • SLE

“Insight” Ni

“Reverie” Ni(F.)

Internal Insight – fantasizing scenarios & aspirational daydreaming. One’s inner reflection on the flow of events (be they historical or fictional) in terms of narrative significance & subtext.

  • IEI

«» “Apprehension” Ni(T.)

Detached Insight – nonverbal understanding of concepts & awareness of temporal trends. Insight into events in terms of their strategic implications and how they’re likely to play out over time.

  • ILI

“Imagination” Ne

«» “Ideation” Ne(T.)

Detached Imagination – the active generation and creative manipulation of concepts, as well as other uses of one’s imaginative capacities to brainstorm and explore semantic possibilities.

  • ILE

“Inspiration” Ne(F.)

Internal Imagination – one’s inner sense of potentiality & spontaneous impulses for creative expression. Frawing upon previous experience to imagine novel ways of doing things, activities to explore, and other opportunities for personal growth.

  • IEE

“Structure” Ti

«» “Habitus” Ti(S.)

External Structure – embodied physical structures & codified behavioral habits. The tangible, defining forms of individual subjects, groups, objects and other organized systems.

  • LSI

“Intellect” Ti(N.)

Detached Structure – the linguistic formatting and interpretative schema of one’s mind. Used to frame and articulate concepts into coherent, communicable ideas.

  • LII

“Application” Te

“Reason” Te(N.)

Detached Application –  informal logic & articulation of fact propositions. Uses of available data to figure out productive end goals and formulate workable strategies.

  • LIE

«» “Praxis” Te(S.)

External Application –  informal methodologies & practical experimentation. The flexible use of hands-on techniques and material resources to improve the workflow of one’s physical environment.

  • LSE

“Character” Fi

«» “Soul” Fi(N.)

Internal Character – inner values & ideals. The totality of one’s foundational convictions, moral inclinations and abstract notions of what’s inherently worthwhile in life.

  • EII

“Animus” Fi(S.)

Involved Character –  volitive preferences & relational bonds. The totality of a subject’s stable, visceral attitudes of affinity/aversion towards particular individuals and concrete objects of experience.

  • ESI

“Emotion” Fe

“Affect” Fe(S.)

Involved Emotion – physiological moods & expression. The physical conveyance of somatic feelings that mediate sensory experiences (both within and between subjects) through aesthetic signals, creating atmospheric “vibes”.

  • ESE

«» “Sentiment” Fe(N.)

Internal Emotion – inner opinions & passions. Deeply felt emanations of emotion which are conveyed through dramatic rhetoric & symbolic gestures, often inciting others to feel and act accordingly.
